When we read the Scholastic issue “A visit to Chinatown” we all got very interested in knowing more about the Chinese culture and we decided to base our English project on China.
After some discussion, we had the idea of having an exhibition. Then, we had to figure out how to set small stands each with a short presentation of information about China. Both classes, Red and Yellow were excited about the project. We all gathered information, outfits, Chinese manufacturing and handcrafts, posters and signs. We all worked hard asking our families, friends and neighbors for different items for the project.
Finally, the Expo China was held at the backyard of the Ibero School on Friday March 7th, 2008 at 8:30 a.m. We set up five stands to show different aspects of China, one for the geographical location of China and its government, one for the languages, one for sports, one for the calendar and Chinese handcrafts and one round table with fine China, table mats, chopsticks, soup bowls, tea sets and of course traditional fortune cookies. The music surrounded us and gave a mystic atmosphere to the event.
Some students were dressed in typical Chinese costumes to give the visitors a guided tour of the stands. Other students were standing at each stand to tell the visitors about China. Our closure was excellent; Fernando Carrillo Medina and María José López Zozaya, winners of medals in national contests, gave us a demonstration of martial arts disciplines.
Everybody, kids, parents and visitors felt that we had successfully accomplished our goal of learning more about China and sharing the information with our visitors.
It was really rewarding to see the visitors’ happy faces and to hear comments like the ones below,
“I memorized my lines very well but, I got nervous and could hardly speak in front of the parents”
Andrea Hernández Ek.
“The ambiance was great! It reminded me of Epcot Center!”
Katy Rodríguez de Coral.
“It was great. Everyone did a great job!”
Rocsana Pat de Méndez.
